This year marks the seventieth anniversary of Godzilla, King of the Monsters. While Godzilla has never really gone out of style, there’s no denying the character has seen a big resurgence in recent years, with appearances in new media properties in the United States and Japan alike. But with the new Stern Pinball reskin of their Premium Godzilla cabinet in glorious black and white, Godzilla fans and pinball fans alike can soon see a retro restyling of the icon that pays clearer homage to the character’s fifties creature feature origins.
The 70th Anniversary Premium Edition of the Godzilla table is more-or-less the same basic design as the regular Premium Edition, and is even priced the same as the color model, perhaps in recognition of the fact that some people would rather have a colorful pinball machine than the greyscale aesthetic. Either way, the goal of the player remains the same- work alongside Mothra, Rodan, and Anguiras to repel the Xilien invasion, and MechaGodzilla along with it, to become King of the Monsters. All versions of the table are also getting a new software update in the form of the King of the Monsters challenge, which can be accessed via Challenge Mode.
The Pop-up Arcade at the Marriott Marquis in San Diego is a yearly fixture at Comic-Con, and enters its final today tomorrow on July 28th not even requiring a Comic-Con badge for entry. Seth Davis, the President and CEO of Stern, has expressed pride in the project, emphasizing the pinball company’s continuing partnership with Toho. More information about the Godzilla family of tables can be viewed at Stern’s official website for the project here.
