Atari 2600 Thunderground from SEGA | It’s All About Design!

Thunderground is an Atari 2600 video game developed by Sega Electronics and released by Sega in 1983. It appears to have been inspired mainly by one section of arcade game Borderline (1981), which sees a player drive a tank underground firing at other tanks while avoiding not to get hit. Your task is to tunnel upwards to destroy several nuclear missile bases before the time is up.

Like the original Borderline, it has digging elements similar to Namco’s Dig Dug, which the original Borderline predated by a year. Due to the technical limitations of the Atari 2600, it lacks the vertical-scrolling levels of Borderline, but instead adapts a single-screen level that has similarities to Dig Dug and Combat.
