Iron Meat by Brian Lesyk

Retroware’s latest release, Iron Meat, takes the best parts of Contra III: The Alien Wars (Konami, 1992) and mixes in a solid dose of Cronenberg-level body horror elements for a heart-pounding run-and-gun platform shooter experience. You play as Vadim, a super-soldier tasked with defending Earth against an insatiable alien onslaught. Players can go at it alone or dial-up the fun with some simultaneous two-player co-op action. With an arsenal of discoverable weapons, dozens of unlockable player skins, achievements to…well…achieve, and nine multi-scrolling levels to rampage through, Iron Meat is a much-welcomed love letter to the fast-paced and challenging 16-bit actions titles of yesteryear.

Notably, Iron Meat recently became Retroware’s first “speed run” release, meaning it launched with digital and physical availability on its release date—something virtually unheard of in today’s indie game distribution market. Iron Meat’s creator, Ivan Suvarov, began his career with traditional drawing, but later decided to parlay his artistic skills into producing high-quality pixel art. Ivan eventually dabbled in programming games on a hobbyist level. His production of Iron Meat begin in 2017 with him later collaborating with Retroware in 2019. Iron Meat has two in-game soundtracks, both created by Vladimir “Darkman007” Tugay—the more modern BGM and the old school chiptune versions of the same songs—both highly reminiscent of hard-driving metal tracks found in the DOOM series of games.

Iron Meat is currently available for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4/5, Xbox Series, and PC. – www.ironmeat.com
