The PlayStation Portable (PSP) is handheld game console developed by Sony. It was first announced at E3 in 2003 and shown to the public in ay of 2004. It was released in Japan on December 12, 2004, and in North America on March 24, 2005. The PSP primarily competed with the Nintendo DS as part of the seventh generation of video game handhelds.
In 1995, Sony entered the U.S. and European console markets with the original PlayStation, offering superior graphics and multimedia capabilities, including future models that could play Blu-ray discs. Seeing an opportunity in the handheld market, Sony aimed to compete against Nintendo. In 2003, as Nintendo was preparing to switch from the Game Boy Advance to a new generation, Sony announced the PlayStation Portable (PSP), positioning itself as a strong competitor to Nintendo in the handheld gaming space.
