September 26 marked the 40-year anniversary of Konami’s Castlevania on NES and to celebrate, the publisher has made the game available for free on IOS and Android devices. As well Konami has slashed prices on several Castlevania games on the PlayStation and Steam stores. Those sales run through October 1 and October 7. The next…
I’ve always been content to admire the Dark Souls games from afar, rather than get particularly into them myself, and part of that is probably a crumb of leftover resentment from trying to wrangle the multiplayer features in those early games. Love it or hate it, it’s esoteric at the best of times and not…
“I’m getting pretty fed up with all these “ports” made with AI”. We’ve seen a flood of AI-assisted retro gaming projects lately, from translations to decompilation and recompilation efforts. Opinion is sharply divided on the merit of such projects; AI tools help speed things up for sure, but they often come with unwelcome side effects…
Gears of War: E-Day is almost here, but that doesn’t mean its developers have been spared in Microsoft’s latest wave of layoffs as part of the Xbox “reset.” While The Coalition, the studio currently working on the Gears of War series, was not mentioned by name in Matt Booty’s “Continuing Our Reset” blog post, story…
Uh-oh. The MMO no-life virus started coursing through me as soon as I jumped into WoW: Forever’s beta, and it’s refusing to let up. According to a report…
The latest stage of Xbox’s delicately named “reset” arrived last Tuesday—but its impact on World’s Edge Studio, the developer now behind the Age of Empires series, was only briefly mentioned in Xbox CCO Matt Booty’s announcement. On sites like resetera and LinkedIn, former employees of the RTS developer have shared that it was hit especially…

Chequered flag. On 24th September 2019, Nintendo launched Mario Kart Tour for mobile devices. This was Mario’s second outing in mobile gaming, following 2016’s Super Mario Run, which had an impressive initial reception but seemingly failed to generate much revenue (compared with other big mobile games, including Nintendo’s own Fire Emblem Heroes). Mario Kart Tour…
