Mech’in a right fuss. Back in 2019, we reported that Super Fighter Team planned to localise the excellent tactical RPG Vixen 357 for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis, ending decades of Japanese exclusivity for the title. Developed by Career Soft – the same team behind Langrisser, Elthlead, Gaia no Monshou and Gaiflame – Vixen 357 originally…
You’ve got to start somewhere. A couple of years ago, I penned a feature for this very site which explored the idea that playing video games – like any other formative memory – can be linked to physical locations. For example, you might fondly remember a certain town because it’s where you bought a favourite…
Sega’s 8-bit system outsold some pretty big names in the United Kingdom. In North America and Japan, the Sega Master System is little more than a footnote. Those two significant markets were dominated by the NES / Famicom, with Nintendo effectively locking out competition via some rather nefarious business practices – and its own library…
Thin as a deck of cards, but more like the Joker than the Ace. I’m not going to bury the lede in this review. Playing games on the GamerCard (£149) is mostly a miserable experience. That’s a pity, because for quite a few old farts, the Sinclair name remains synonymous with gaming. Fortunately, they’ve in…
Go Ape! Spit! Classic gaming purveyor New Old Pixels announced that it has signed a deal with publisher Microids to bring everyone’s favourite video game gorilla to a variety of dormant home computer platforms. No, not that one; they mean Toki. “Toki is exactly the kind of project we created New Old Pixels for: giving…
After the monster success of Pokemon Red & Blue, Nintendo released Pokemon Yellow in 1998 to massive success. Almost 30 years later, it still remains as one of the best Game Boy games ever and a testament to the timeless RPG series Pokemon has become. A more polished version of the original games, Pokemon Yellow…
“I knew I wouldn’t be capable of doing it without tackling other smaller games first”. Undoubtedly, one of our most-anticipated retro projects at the moment is marc_max, Kensu, and Jorge’s upcoming colourisation ROM hack of Donkey Kong ’94 (the underrated remake/sequel of the 1981 arcade game, which was completely overshadowed back in the ’90s by…
Dead Man Dan returns when we need him most. It’s time to Rise From Your Grave (Altered Beast-style), as PlayStation recomp community BlackLabelHQ has released its first beta for the tremendously scary and tremendously silly MediEvil, now available for PC. As noted by the dedicated MediEvil community, Gallowpedia, BlackLabelHQ’s port reconstructs the cult 1998 adventure…
Demon Slay-er. If there’s something strange in the neigh-bour-hood and the Ghostbusters are already engaged, who you gonna call? Ghost Sweeper Mikami: The Exorcist With A Nice Body, that’s who. The demon-mashing, hyper-capitalist fashionista has already more than proven her worth when it comes to expunging ghosts and ghoulies, having appeared in a wealth of…
Long Fellow. How’s the weather up there? Hamster’s Console Archives develops a head for heights this week, adding the Famicom port of Taito’s bizarrely titled (and even more bizarrely executed) platformer, Chack’n Pop. Chack’n Pop arrived in arcades in 1984 and was ported to a variety of Japanese platforms, including the MSX, FM-7, and NEC…
