REMINISCING NEW YORK’S TWIN TOWERS – by Michael Thomasson

New York City is the largest city in the United States. Its culture is far reaching and iconic, and as a
result, it has been used as a setting in numerous videogames. The skyline was often used to represent the great city, as it was easily identifiable by the Statue of Liberty and the World Trade Center’s Twin Towers, which were the tallest buildings in the world at the time of their completion.

As a teen, Cobra Command was my favorite laserdisc title, even more so than Dragon’s Lair. Now, whenever I play the game, it just rips my heart out. Today, the opening level’s voiceover – “Okay Captain, let’s knock ‘em out of New York” – takes on a whole new meaning, as the animation zooms into lower Manhattan and prominently focuses on the Twin Towers and the Statue of Liberty. There are other games that also trigger a sense of sadness or momentarily cause me to gasp in remembrance. They remind me of the atrocities endured that day by many who lost much more than me, but also serve therapeutically on a level understood more by trained professional than a simple scribe such as myself.
