Part of that discrepancy stems from the fact that the American console crash derailed Xevious’s journey. Atari Inc. manufactured and distributed the arcade machine here, but the company’s dissolution prevented the game from reaching eager audiences at home until well after it had ceased to be relevant. Xevious is a timeless classic, but it would have had a lot more initial impact in 1984 (when it should have shipped for 7800) than in 1987 (when it actually shipped for 7800).
