By comparison, the freedom of choice in Mega Man allowed struggling players the opportunity to gain an advantage by prioritizing the levels they found easiest.

The structure of Mega Man facilitated its signature gimmick: the “blue bomber” could capture the attack powers of defeated bosses, then use them in subsequent stages. Inspired by rock paper scissors, bosses were resistant or weak to other bosses’ weapons, making the player’s chosen progression even more significant.
