Magic is very strong in Gothic Remake, especially early on in the game, where it can add a big boost to your firepower. This is why it’s a good idea to complete The Price of Magic quest in the Old Camp. All you need to do is find a couple of items for the mage Torrez, and in return, he’ll give you a valuable spell rune which lets you cast permanently so long as you have mana in the tank.
This will also unlock his magical inventory, letting you purchase more spells, including one-time consumable scrolls, though these will be well beyond your price range early on. Still, offensive magic will let you punch well above your weight, so here’s how to complete the quest.
How to complete The Price of Magic in Gothic Remake

You’ll meet the mage Torrez in the southwest of the Old Camp near the big market area covered by hanging cloth. This is the same area with Fisk, Dexter, and Mordrag. To get here, simply:
- Head to the castle entrance from the north gate
- Take a right down past the area with the water and Gravo’s shack
- Keep going and you’ll find Torrez on the right by the well, just before you reach the big market area with the fireplace and the cloth coverings above
After speaking to him, Torrez will tell you that you potentially have aptitude for magic, but that you need to get him some things, namely:
- 1x Parchment
- 2x Wolf’s Claw
To start, you can get the parchment from Graham, the map maker, whose shack is just to the left of the north gate where you originally entered the Old Camp. He’s a plainly dressed gent with a short black beard and a receding hairline—you’ll usually find him wandering around this area, or by the cooking cauldron near where his shack is. One Parchment will cost you 13 ore nuggets.
Now, for the Wolf’s Claws, you have a couple of options. You can buy them from Mordrag near the market area—from where Torrez is, head through the market area, out the other side, and keep an eye to your left for him sitting on a bench outside a shack. These cost seven ore nuggets each, so 14 in total.
However, you can get these for free also, even early on. I’ll show you how to do this in video above, but if you can’t see that, do the following:
- Head out the north gate and over the bridge with the guards standing watch, where you originally entered from
- Go north a little way into the woods until you find the wolf den
- Get a wolf’s attention and then lead it back to the bridge guards who will kill it, letting you loot the body
Wolves are quite fearsome enemies early on, especially without armour, but this method will get you the Wolf’s Claws you need for free. Now, head back to Torrez and deliver the materials. You’ll now have the option to learn Rune Magic at the cost of five learning points.

He will craft you a rune (a spell you can permanently use, unlike consumable scrolls). He gives you a choice between fire bolt or healing. I personally recommend fire bolt, since it really lets you deal a lot of damage early on, and you can always heal by eating instead. This will also unlock Torrez’s store, where he sells scrolls, runes, mana potions, albeit at a high price.
While resting and passing time will regen mana, the cheap and nasty way is to smoke swamp weed, which temporarily reduces dex. You can purchase this at vendors like Dexter in that market area (and he’ll offer you some for free), though the Swamp Camp gives a daily ration of it, too. Consider taking The Cult’s Recipe quest from Dexter to find a reason to head there.
If you go to the New Camp in the west of The Colony, you can also pay learning points to increase your overall mana with Cronos, the Water Mage. You’ll find him in their headquarters at the back of the big settlement cave.
