An 8-bit Cuphead game is being programmed in assembly language for the Sega Master System

At today’s Summer Game Fest showcase, we learned that a pair of new Cuphead games are in development. One is a “hand-animated” successor to the original 2017 sidescroller, which emulates golden age cartoons. The other is retro in a different way: “an 8-bit action platformer named Mighty Cuphead Adventure.”

The really notable thing about Mighty Cuphead Adventure is that it’s being developed in assembly—a low-level programming language—to the specifications of the Sega Master System, an 8-bit console released in the mid-’80s.

“While the game will absolutely be compatible with modern consoles and PC,” developer Studio MDHR said in a press release, “players who want a true blast from the past will be able to experience it on a physical cartridge on the Sega Master System home gaming console.”

The commitment to developing Mighty Cuphead Adventure with techniques from the ’80s mirrors the commitment to using hand-drawn, 1930s-style animations in the main Cuphead series. The developer will share more details about the game “in the months ahead.”
