Blizzard is aware Overwatch fans are tired of seeing its fanciest skins go to the same heroes and it’s ‘the number one’ thing it’s working to fix next

Overwatch has over 40 heroes at this point, each with their own legion of fans. Blizzard can’t make everyone happy when it comes to releasing new skins, but its most recent skins have fans convinced it’s playing favorites.

Heroes who have already been swimming in skins, like Kiriko and Genji, keep getting more and more while other heroes are left with scraps.

Blizzard has started to drop Mythic skins for heroes who already have them, upsetting those who’ve waited years to see their favorite heroes get their first one. These fancy skins have customizable parts and change the visual effects on abilities. They’re also the most expensive skins in the game at around $70, or 80 Mythic Prisms, a currency acquired by completing tiers on the battle pass or purchasing directly from the shop.

Only two Mythic skins come out every season, which is why many players are frustrated seeing some heroes get more while others have none. The ire around repeat Mythics comes up every time another one comes out, but has grown more intense as the trend continues. The recent Mythic Void Widowmaker skin—her second Mythic—saw an overwhelmingly negative response because it arrived in the same season Genji got his second Mythic skin.

In an interview with PC Gamer, art director Dion Rogers said the team never intentionally leaves out certain heroes from Mythic discussions. “It’s just more of what the team is excited about in the moment, or the very cool ideas sitting in front of us basically,” he said. Some heroes are easier to get to than others, he added.

But Rogers said the team has seen the feedback about repeat Mythics and is going to work on spreading them out better in the future. Specifically, he said it’ll be “the number one thing” the team will start to conceptualize next.

“We’ve done recently a big blue-sky sketch, like hit as many as these guys as possible and see if something jumps out,” he said.

Skins presumably take a while to come together, so I wouldn’t expect to see a wider variety of Mythics for several months, but it’s promising to hear that some of the less conventional heroes might finally get their own time to shine soon.
