Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is apparently a super heavyweight 200GB installation: ‘We need to overcome the hardware to a certain extent’

In a new VGC interview, Final Fantasy 7 Revelation director Naoki Hamaguchi revealed that the upcoming JRPG is looking at a 200GB install size, bigger than almost any game out there, and certainly an outlier among singleplayer RPGs.

Hamaguchi was responding to a question about Revelation’s retail, physical version. It was previously disclosed that Revelation would require additional downloads alongside the two blu-ray discs that come in the box. We’re not even part of that particular conversation on PC⁠—we’re lucky to get a download code in a plastic box these days.

“Things are still getting worked out, but it’s probably going to be around 200GB of game,” Hamaguchi said. “I understand there are a lot of opinions about this topic, but at the end of the day, the fact is we need to overcome the hardware to a certain extent.”

That’s one big boy. For context, FF7 Remake requires 100GB of available hard drive space on Steam, while Rebirth demands 155⁠—Revelation’s full system specs are not yet up on its own page. All told, the FF7 Remake trilogy will weigh in at 455 GB of space. While the original PS1 game was quite the contender in its time, shipping on three CDs, at the end of the day it consisted of about a gig and a half of data⁠—1.3 according to TheGamer, and 1.7 according to GamingBolt.

I think the biggest install I’ve ever tolerated was 150GB of Destiny 2, but I’m a different person now. Call of Duty has grown infamous as a hard drive hog, but it’s also relatively modular. At a time of brutal storage markups amid the RAMpocalypse, 200GB is a tough ask for one game, but Revelation might be one of the rare few with the star power to pull it off.
