It’s fair to say that Sonic has had his ups and downs over the decades. That the character has starred in some legendary games isn’t up for debate, but he’s also had his low points – so much so that Sega was apparently even considering retiring the franchise at one point.
That’s what current Sonic Team boss Takashi Iizuka claims, at least. The lead producer for the Sonic the Hedgehog series at Sega has been speaking to the media during Tokyo Game Show (thanks, One More Game), and reveals how he had to “fight” to keep Sonic going:
