Award-winning sci-fi author NK Jemisin joins BioWare’s mourners and scorns a broken industry for killing geese that ‘laid the golden eggs’

The death of BioWare has provoked a whole lot of tributes, memorialisation, and plain old nostalgia as all sorts of people come together to remember the bangers the erstwhile king of RPGs put out in its prime. CD Projekt Red, imsim founding father Warren Spector, and we here at PCG have all been trading BioWare memories (and sometimes lamenting the influence of EA, which acquired the studio back in 2007).

But the BioWare classics were big enough bangers to transcend videogames in their influence. Over on Bluesky, award-winning sci-fi and fantasy writer Nora Jemisin (better known as NK Jemisin) has been mourning the studio too.

“RIP Bioware. The [Mass Effect] and [Dragon Age] games were a literal inspiration, and I can’t count how many times I’ve replayed my faves,” Jemisin wrote. “I made lifelong friends on ME3 Multiplayer. I still think Jennifer Hepler is the best game writer I’ve seen, and Jennifer Hale’s the best VA.”

Hepler was a long-time Dragon Age writer who “was pretty much in charge of the dwarf origin story” in Origins, and also shaped much of the setting’s dwarven culture in general. Jennifer Hale, meanwhile, is Jennifer Hale: Dynaheir, Mazzy Fentan, Bastila Shan, the female Commander Shepard, and plenty else. Many people, myself included, first became aware of Hale through her contributions to BioWare’s RPGs.

“Watching what’s happening to the game industry [right now] is so frustrating,” Jemisin continued. “It was the goose that laid the golden eggs, guys. All you had to do was not kill it.” Alas, every new year brings bigger and more expensive games that demand bigger and more dramatic returns. When they fail to bring them in? It’s devs who suffer, as evidenced by the swingeing bout of layoffs that have afflicted the industry over the last several years. Rarely ever touches the executives, though. Funny how that works.
