PUBG, the battle royale that lets you wear a frying pan on your ass to keep it from getting shot off, is being made into a live action series for Netflix.
Narrative isn’t really PUBG’s strong point, but this one might be interesting for one big reason: Donald Glover is set to write, direct, and executive produce the series, and will also star in it. Stephen Glover, Donald’s brother and frequent collaborator, is also attached to the project as writer and executive producer.
Glover has won numerous awards over the years for writing, acting, and music (under his stage name Childish Gambino), to the point that “list of awards and nominations received by Donald Glover” has its own remarkably lengthy Wikipedia page. Highlights include two Primetime Emmy awards, two Golden Globes, five Grammy Awards, two Peabody Awards, and five Writers Guild of America Awards.
The upside of PUBG not having a strong pre-existing story like, say, Halo or Fallout is that it affords creators the opportunity to do their own thing, and as I said, that could be very interesting indeed with Glover at the helm. His 2018 music video for This Is America, built around themes of racism and gun violence in the US, was critically acclaimed and won multiple awards, but also attracted considerable controversy over its violent content. More recently, his Mr. & Mrs. Smith series on Amazon Prime, which premiered in 2024, drew 16 Primetime Emmy nominations for its first season, including “Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series” for Glover himself.
No other details about the upcoming PUBG show on Netflix were announced, but even so, I’m definitely curious about this one and looking forward to learning more.
