GTA 6 was meant to release today, and amid everyone mourning what could have been one superfan decides to queue up at GameStop anyway

Do you remember where you were just over a year ago, on May 6, 2025? That’s when Rockstar released its second trailer for Grand Theft Auto 6 and also confirmed its updated release date: May 26, 2026. Neither can I, but I do know I was excited as all hell alongside every other gamer, and that’s what makes today so painful.

A few months went by before Rockstar made the announcement that the floodgates to Leonida wouldn’t open on May 26, instead delaying it for a second time to November 19, 2026, to “allow us to finish the game with the level of polish you have come to expect and deserve.”

It’s never a bad idea to give developers more time to polish a game, and as Take-Two’s CEO Strauss Zelnick previously said: “we’ve never regretted [a delay] in retrospect.” But that doesn’t mean the delay didn’t leave a mark. Something that plenty of fans have reflected on, especially today.

If you dare venture over to GTA 6’s subreddit you’ll find a bevy of despairing fans, all mourning what could have been had Rockstar not delayed GTA 6 for the second time. People are reposting Rockstar’s initial post about the May 26 release date, grasping at a reality that’s no longer there.

There’s a mountain of depressing videos. We’ve got Tobey Maguire’s breakdown in Pawn Sacrifice, Al Pacino screaming his lungs out, and an obligatory James Gandolfini scene from The Sopranos.

Today was supposed to be the day for us all to rejoice. 🥺 from r/GTA6

Some dude even got all dressed up in their Sunday best and started queuing outside of GameStop: “I’m waiting in front of GameStop until it opens because they said that the game comes out today but I’m the only one here. I don’t get it. I thought that everyone was excited for this game.”

“Today was supposed to be the day for us all to rejoice,” another player says. “Let’s just pray there’s no more delays.” Well the good news is there won’t be any more delays, that is if Zelnick is to be believed (I’d say that’s a safe bet). And while I’m not sure I believe all the theorists claiming that Rockstar’ll give fans some more scraps to chew on because today is such a special day, at least we only have to wait 176 days until its release—oh god, that’s a long time.
