Believe it or not, Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age was the first title ever announced for the original Switch, back when it was only known publicly as the mysterious ‘NX’ project. When it came out in 2019, it quickly asserted itself both as one of the finest RPGs on the system and as further proof of the calibre of games we could expect from the hybrid device. It was no surprise then that Square Enix decided to port it for the next generation, though the outcome feels anticlimactic.
Let’s get one thing out of the way upfront: Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age is one of the greatest modern examples of a ‘classic’ JRPG. That was true when it came out, and that’s still true today; any newcomer or RPG fan who hasn’t played it yet is in for a fantastic time. That said, it’s tough not to be disappointed specifically in the Switch 2 version.
