For a moment it looked like Grand Theft Auto 6 might be playable on PC on launch day—then Xbox’s chief strategy officer crashed the party

We still don’t have a PC launch date for Grand Theft Auto 6, or even official confirmation that it’s ever going to come our way, even though we all know it is. But for one brief shining moment, fans on PC had hope that maybe they’d be able to backdoor their way into the cool kids club—that despite the absence of a PC version, they might be able to play it on November 19 anyway, without having to shell out for a new game console.

Alas, the word has come down from on high, and that word is: “No.”

The ball got rolling when The Verge reported on October 6 that Xbox had secured the exclusive right to deliver GTA 6 via streaming platforms—that is, Xbox Cloud Gaming. And that would presumably make the game playable on PC, as Xbox Cloud Gaming is accessible through any PC rocking Windows 10 version 20H2 or later.

You’d almost certainly have to sign up for Game Pass Ultimate to access it, and you’d need a better internet connection than mine to make it work, but even so: Grand Theft Auto 6, on PC, on launch day. Holy guacamole!

Alas, it is now time to lock eyes with the metaphorical skull in your hand and ponder that dream, that faraway hope, and all that has brought them low—which in this case is Xbox chief strategy officer Matthew Ball, who delivered the bad news on X.

“While the excitement for GTA 6 and Xbox is great to see, it has also led to some misreporting,” Ball wrote. “We are looking forward to launching GTA 6 on Xbox November 19, though the game will not be streaming exclusively or to PC.”

That’s some real infinite jest, alright! Which I think is applicable to the whole situation: I actually buy the argument that it’s better to develop a game of this scale within the constraints of consoles and then expand to the greater (and more unpredictable) power of PC later, and I have no doubt that Rockstar and Take-Two also enjoy the tighter constraints on the user end of things too: You’re not going to find shenanigans like Joshua Wolens’ effort to mod GTA 5 into GTA 6 in the worst way possible on a PlayStation 5, after all.

But I also think PCG’s Ted Litchfield hit the nail on the head with his analysis: “Rockstar banks on a second revenue bump from its games’ PC releases, a little afterburner of profit that includes no shortage of PC-favoring players who buy the game twice.” There really is no dip like the double dip.

Anyway, some of the responses to Ball’s message complain that the message is vague or ambiguous, although I’m not sure how: There are questions, sure, most obviously how Xbox will stream GTA 6 without making it accessible to PCs that can normally access streamed Xbox games. It’s a fair point, and I suppose if one has an inflated sense of optimism and squints at the statement just right, a faint glimmer of that hope might remain. But to me, ‘will not be streaming to PC’ seems pretty cut-and-dried: Our long, wintry wait will continue.
