Today we’re excited to finally confirm that Metro 2039 launches February 4 2027*.

Being able to celebrate this announcement with you all during State of Play was a huge honour, so we wanted to offer something special for everyone watching – the world debut of console gameplay, captured exclusively on PlayStation 5 Pro.

Metro 2039 launches February 4 2027, PS5 Pro gameplay revealed

The Spartans were wolves. But The Stranger is something worse …

The trailer starts just after Metro 2039’s new protagonist – The Stranger – has left the dark confines of the tunnels below and ventured up onto the thawing post-apocalyptic ruins of Moscow.

The Stranger is a former Spartan warrior with a dark past, one who never wanted to return to the Metro he left behind. As an elite soldier who’s as brutal as he is adaptable, his Spartan armor marks him out as a wolf, even a potential hero, but he’s far worse than that.

A lethal world

In our gameplay The Stranger is searching for a Novoreich fortress located inside a nearby dam, but every step on the surface is potentially lethal. Within seconds he’s swimming in radiation, and the ruined apartment blocks looming over him threaten to hide multiple dangers.

First and foremost, Metro 2039 is a solo, story-driven FPS, but we captured this sequence specifically to give a taste of Metro’s kinetic combat and tense exploration amongst dense, ruined environments.

As The Stranger, players will have to manage radiation and equipment to survive, but will also come equipped with the weapons and tools to choose their approach – whether that’s charging their Shatun rifle to deliver deadly silenced headshots, using Molotovs to clear a room, or weaving between disintegrating masonry to deliver the killing blow from a Duplet shotgun.

Performant technology

Like every Metro game we’ve made, Metro 2039 runs on our own proprietary technology, the 4A Engine, built to help us make the worlds and games we want to make.

In 2021 we were proud to release Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition, which turned out to be one of the early pioneers of 60fps ray tracing support on PlayStation 5.

For Metro 2039, we’ve built on everything we’ve learned in years since to deliver the best-looking Metro to date, and of course we’re delighted to confirm that both PS5 and PS5 Pro players will be able to experience Metro 2039 with ray tracing, including at a smooth 60fps with a dedicated Performance Mode.

Metro 2039 is available to wishlist today on PlayStation Store, and pre-orders will go live later this year.

We’ll be revealing much more about Metro 2039’s story, gameplay, technology and PlayStation 5 features in the future, and we can’t wait to see you in the tunnels on February 4.

* Available February 5th in some territories including Asia, Australia & New Zealand
